My Favorite Childhood Foods
This post will be a testament that I probably had too much time on my hands today. The second day of the new year (January 2, 2013) I had to report for jury duty. No electronics were allowed in the court building, so while I was waiting to find out if I would be serving on a case, I opened a notebook, took out a pencil and started doodling. While doodling I started thinking about food. I started thinking about my favorite childhood foods. Here’s what I wrote:
Favorite Dinners of All Time = Sunday Dinners – Favorite Sunday Dinner would consist of:
*Fried Chicken
*Rice and Gravy
*Potato Salad
*String Beans
Other Favorite Dinner Foods: Fried Pork Chops, Spare Ribs, Salmon Croquettes, Liver, Chicken steak
Favorite Side foods: Cucumbers marinated in vinegar, Sliced Tomatoes
Favorite Beverages: Grape Kool Aid, Homemade Lemonade, Orange Nehi Soda (My mama told us coffee would stunt our growth. I don’t drink coffee to this day.)
Favorite Dessert: Lemon Meringue Pie, Sweet Potato Pie, Apple Pie, Butter Pecan Ice Cream
Favorite Snacks: Popcorn, Potato Chips, Mars Bars
Favorite Breakfast Foods: Corn Flakes, Rice Krispies, Fried Fatback, Bacon, Grits, Scramble Eggs with Cheese, Cheese Toast, Fried Liver Pudding, Sausage, White Bread Toast
Favorite Friday or Saturday Food: Fried Fish, Homemade Potato chips, Fried Skins
Worst Foods Ever: Tongue, Fish Sticks
So, there you have it!

My Mama and Grandmother – My two favorite cooks of all time!
When my sister, brothers and I noticed that my mama’s food just didn’t taste good anymore was when we also noticed the early signs of Alzheimer’s. I miss my mama. I miss our Sunday dinners.
Can’t wait until I’m called for jury duty again. Who know’s what I’ll come up with next time. Not to worry. I’ll be sure to share it with you.

Wow, Wambui, reading this post made me get hungry even though I am sick with a flu and haven’t eaten all day. Everything you wrote about sounds divine EXCEPT for liver and tongue! Good for you for being creative while waiting for jury duty. You were so lucky to be raised by your mama who was such a fine cook and a fine person. My grandma was a great cook too – I miss her. If she were still here, her chicken soup would surely cure me! I hope you are doing well and thanks so much for your always-fabulous writing. with love and blessings always from your big fan, Dyane
